‘Never Just A Car’ – Waarom auto’s zo belangrijk zijn in films

“I have trouble with names and faces, but I never forget a car.” Het wordt gezegd in The Love Bug (1968), maar geldt natuurlijk voor alle auto’s die in de afgelopen decennia door Hollywood zijn vereeuwigd. De trouwe vierwieler speelt een grote rol in films. Hoe groot? Dat legt Thomas Flight uit in zijn fascinerende essay ‘Never Just A Car’.

Want of het nou gaat om de Great White Whale uit Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, de DeLorean uit Back to the Future, Eleanor uit Gone in 60 Seconds, de Ferrari 250 GT uit Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Lighting McQueen uit Cars of zelfs Bumblebee uit de Transformers-films, een auto in een film is nooit zomaar een auto.

Zelfrijdende auto’s

“Cinema is the technological sibling of the car”, aldus Thomas Flight in bovenstaand essay. “Born of the same era, neither knows of a time without the other.” En met het oog op de toekomst, roept dat ook een mooie vraag op. “Will the arrival of self-driving cars be like the cellphone? An obstacle that writers have to learn how to write for?” We gaan het zien in de komende tien jaar.
